Motorists have been left stuck on the highway after a trailer overturned at Escarpments in Mai Mahiu along the Nairobi-Mai Mahiu-Naivasha road.
Reportedly, the accident was caused by a head-on collision between the trailer and another truck ferrying sand.
The trailer driver lost his life on the spot, while the lorry driver was rushed to the hospital in critical condition for further treatment.
In images seen by Kenyans.co.ke, the overturned vehicle can be seen blocking the road, making it impossible for other vehicles from both sides to pass.
The sand truck, on the other hand, was also on the site but did not suffer much damage, and the sand remained intact.
Meanwhile, a tow truck was also spotted on the scene, kicking off operations to clear the road as onlookers gawked at the scene.
As such, motorists planning to traverse the Nairobi-Narok Highway have been warned to follow other routes or postpone their trips to avoid the traffic building up on the highway.
The spot, which is just past the smallest Catholic Church in the country, has become synonymous with similar accidents involving huge container trucks.
On June 9, a police officer was among two people who died in a road accident that occurred in the Maduro area along the Narok–Mai Mahiu Road.
The crash reportedly happened when a long-distance trailer lost control and rammed into two private vehicles—a Toyota Prado TX and a Toyota G-Touring.
Witnesses claimed the trailer’s brakes failed, leading to the deadly collision on the busy highway.
A few weeks ago, a multi-hour gridlock was recorded along the same highway, with some spending the night on the road on Friday, August 15, due to heavy traffic along the Nairobi-Mai Mahiu-Naivasha highway at the Mai Mahiu area.
