Several people are feared dead following a landslide in Chesongoch, Elgeyo Marakwet County, on Saturday morning, November 1, 2025.
The landslide reportedly occurred at around 4am, following several days of continued heavy rain.
The Kenya Red Cross said in a statement on Saturday morning that its rescue team was already on the ground helping affected families and assessing the level of damage.
“A landslide following heavy overnight rains has hit Moror Village and Chesongoch Centre, Elgeyo Marakwet County, leaving many people injured. Our response team has been activated to respond, assess the situation and support those affected,” Red Cross stated.
Several rivers have also burst their banks due to the heavy rains causing flooding in the area leaving several roads damaged.
Red Cross urged residents to take precautions as rainfall continues across the country.
By the time of publication, the exact number of people injured had not been confirmed, as others are receiving emergency treatment.
In images and videos obtained by Kenyans.co.ke, houses are submerged in and covered by mud. Other houses were seen leaning after being pushed by the mud, with locals stranded awaiting help.
Elgeyo Marakwet Governor Wisley Rotich urged locals in the affected areas to move away from the escarpments in the region, which are prone to mudslides.
“We have dispatched our teams and are working with other agencies to ensure residents are safe," said Rotich.
Samson Cherargei, the Nandi County Senator, joined local leaders in expressing his sympathies to the families affected by the incident.
“Poleni sana people of Marakwet East constituency for the unfortunate massive landslide that has claimed lives, destroyed land, roads and property yesterday night during ongoing rains.”
“My deepest condolences to the families that have lost loved ones and you are in our prayers during these tragic moments,“ he said.
"We are working with the County Government and non-state actors to respond to this unfortunate incident and provide the necessary support to the affected families.
Efforts are underway to restore the destroyed road network to facilitate movement and access for emergency and relief operations," Murkomen stated.
