Kiharu MP Ndindi Nyoro has come under intense criticism after Kenyans unearthed a 2023 post featuring Sudan's Rapid Support Forces (RSF) leader, Mohammed Hamdan Dagalo.
Subsequently, the lawmaker deleted the post, although screenshots of its existence have been circulating, thereby cementing its presence on the internet.
Nyoro had posted the paramilitary leader, suspected of orchestrating atrocious attacks in the ongoing Sudan war, captioning the image with his popular catchphrase, "We are Africans and Africa is our business."
In his defence, Nyoro reposted another image from around the same period, where he had posted Sudan's de facto leader and Army Commander General Abdel Fattah Al-Burhan.
He claimed that the posts were merely to spotlight the major players in the Sudan war, alluding that his post on the RSF leader was not confirmation of his support.
"The posts were purely for informational purposes on who the main actors in Sudan are (were) after the war broke out. Both posts were done at the same time for only that purpose.
The posts were made on April 23, 2023, just hours apart, with the RSF leader making an appearance on Nyoro's timeline about six hours before he posted the military leader.
Following the post, the lawmaker received a lot of backlash, with Kenyans speculating that Nyoro was in support of the RSF paramilitary group.
Its resurgence, two years later, comes at a time when the country, especially President William Ruto, is being accused of facilitating the Sudan war through its alleged support for RSF.
President Ruto has met with the leader and even hosted the group in Nairobi, with accusations of weapons being used in the war being transported through Kenya, also tainting the Kenyan image.
However, speaking during the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) in the United States in September, the President denied claims that he had chosen a side, telling France 24 that he does not support either of the two generals.
He further claimed that he was receiving backlash just because he had offered a dialogue platform for the RSF and the Army General to reach a ceasefire.
“Kenya's position is that the two generals are cut from the same cloth; they are a product of a government overthrown. What Kenya does not agree with is trying to try and think one is better than the other," Ruo stated.
"We must force the two generals to a ceasefire, but there are allegations, rumours and propaganda about Kenya, Egypt and even the UAE. The reason Kenya is being accused is that we offered a dialogue platform."
