Former Principal Secretary Esther Koimett Joins Car and General as Director

Esther Koimett, the former Principal Secretary for Broadcasting and Telecommunications at the Ministry of ICT, Innovation and Youth Affairs, has landed a job at Car and General.

Koimett, who served as PS in former President Uhuru Kenyatta’s administration, has been appointed Director of the publicly listed company.

In a notice on November 7, the company announced her appointment, describing her as a distinguished public servant with over three decades of experience.

"Esther Koimett is one of Kenya’s most seasoned and distinguished public servants, with over 35 years of experience spanning investment promotion, banking, privatization, public enterprise reform, and public policy,” part of the notice reads.

Koimett also held the position of Permanent Secretary (PS) in the Ministry of Tourism and Information during the Kibaki era, from 2002 to 2005.

Other than her time in the Executive, she also served as Investment Secretary and Director General for Public Investments and Portfolio Management at the National Treasury.

Her other roles included CEO of the Kenya Post Office Savings Bank.

The notice describes the former PS as having extensive board experience, and states that prior to her appointment she served as chair of the boards of M-Pesa Holdings Company Ltd and AAR Insurance Kenya Ltd, among others.

In addition to her professional background, Koimett holds a Bachelor of Commerce degree and an MBA from the University of Nairobi, as well as an Advanced Management Programme (AMP) certificate from Strathmore University.

Koimett, the daughter of the late former cabinet minister Nicholas Biwott, is also a member of the Institute of Investment and Financial Analysts.

Car and General Kenya PLC is a diversified company operating across South Sudan, Rwanda, Uganda, and Tanzania.

Founded in 1936, it is headquartered in Nairobi and distributes manufacturing machinery, agribusiness and real estate. The company also distributes scooters, tuk-tuks, generators and motorcycles, as well as other power equipment.
