A candidate for the Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) in Kaloleni, Kilifi County, has died while receiving treatment at a hospital in Mombasa.

The candidate reportedly died while receiving treatment for malaria at Mariakani Sub-County Hospital, where he had been admitted.

According to reports, he initially sought medical attention at a private facility in Kaloleni after he fell ill.

However, he was later transferred to Mariakani Sub-County Hospital in Mombasa when his condition worsened.

Kaloleni Sub-County Police Commander Adan Ibrahim confirmed the incident, stating that the student's body had been taken to the hospital mortuary before his family could collect it for burial in Mombasa, in accordance with Islamic rites.

The tragic incident occurred while thousands of candidates were taking their KCSE exams, which began on November 3, 2025.

This follows another incident in which at least 14 candidates were killed in a landslide in Elgeyo Marakwet County

Due to continued heavy rainfall across the country, the government announced that it would airlift examination materials to Elgeyo Marakwet and other affected regions, as floods and mudslides had rendered some roads impassable.

The government also revealed that special arrangements were put in place to ensure that examinations would be delivered to students who were hospitalised after being affected by the landslides.

Government Spokesperson Isaac Mwaura assured the candidates and Kenyans that exam papers will be airlifted to designated emergency examination centres.

“This tragedy has disrupted the ongoing exams. However, the government, through the Ministry of Education, has organised for the exams to continue uninterrupted," said Mwaura.

"For the affected schools, the exams will be airlifted and for the one student whose left hand was injured, they will do the exam in the hospital,” he added.
