The Director General of Criminal Investigations (DCI), Amin Mohammed, has been elected to the Interpol Executive Committee.

He secured the position during the Interpol General Assembly held in Morocco on Thursday, where he was chosen to represent Kenya and Africa as the regional delegate. Issam Fetoui of Tunisia was also elected, with both set to serve three-year terms.

Reacting to the news, the National Police Service, in which DCI is domiciled, said the election reflects the trust and confidence of Interpol’s member countries in Kenya’s commitment to strengthening regional and global security frameworks.

“It reinforces Kenya’s vision for a safe and resilient Africa, one that advances innovation, deepens meaningful partnerships, and enhances cooperation to counter cyber threats, terrorism, illicit trafficking, and financial crimes, as well as crimes targeting women and children,” NPS said in a statement.

While accepting his election, Amin, who joined the police as a Cadet Inspector in 1989 and steadily rose through the ranks, expressed appreciation to President William Samoei Ruto for nominating and entrusting him with the responsibility to represent Kenya and Africa at this critical global security platform.

“I am deeply honoured to take on this responsibility as Delegate for Africa to the INTERPOL Executive Committee. Your confidence in my candidacy reflects Kenya's commitment to international policing and the importance of partnership across our regions,” the DCI boss said.

Adding that, “I will continue to advocate for the tools, capacities, and cooperation needed to dismantle criminal networks and defend the rights and lives of those who depend on us the most.”

In his new role, Amin will be using the position to elevate the continent's voice and priorities within Interpol, advancing technology-driven policing, strengthening joint operations and intensifying efforts against human trafficking and child exploitation.

Currently, Inspector General Douglas Kanja also serves as the President of the African Union Mechanism for Police Cooperation (AFRIPOL).

Kanja serves as the head of the continental body established under the African Union (AU) to enhance cooperation among African police agencies in combating transnational organised crime and cybercrime across Africa.

Also, he leads the organisation's highest decision-making body, overseeing strategic direction and fostering collaboration among African Union member states to strengthen continental security.

Meanwhile, during the elections, Lucas Philippe of France was elected President of Interpol for a four-year term, while Wang Yong of China was elected Vice-President for Asia on a three-year mandate.

Additionally, Kazumi Ogasawara of Japan was elected as the Delegate for Asia and Stefano Carvelli of Italy as the Delegate for Europe.
