Law Society of Kenya(LSK) released a statement castigating the conduct of the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission(IEBC) during Thursday’s by-elections on Friday, November 28, 2025.

In the statement, LSK warned that the country is sliding into political chaos.

The by-elections, conducted in 22 regions across the country, were marred by widespread chaos and episodes of bloodshed in several areas.

LSK noted that it had been closely following the polls and expressed concern over the level of disorder witnessed, noting that elections should never escalate to such levels of disarray and chaos.

LSK cautioned that Kenya risks undoing its democratic gains if electoral violence continues unchecked.

“While Kenya remains a politically passionate nation, we must be careful not to undo the relative democratic and electoral maturity,” LSK added.

The society warned that with the 2027 General Election on the horizon, the IEBC has little room for complacency.

It highlighted numerous unfulfilled constitutional requirements and said the IEBC must urgently strengthen its preparations.

LSK categorically stated that Kenya cannot afford relapses that enable turmoil similar to what was witnessed during the Thursday polls.

The body called for immediate deterrent measures against perpetrators of electoral violence.

It urged the IEBC and security agencies to commence investigations into violations of Section 11 of the Elections Offenses Act, which prohibits the use of violence during polls.

LSK further called upon the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions (ODPP) to swiftly prosecute those found culpable.

The society also appealed to stakeholders, including civil society, the Judiciary, political parties, and security organs, to deliberate on measures to prevent violence ahead of 2027.
