Gift Osinya, the adopted son of former Nairobi governor Mike Sonko, has graduated with a Bachelor of Science degree in Information Technology from Scott Christian University, barely a decade after surviving a terrorist attack.

Sonko led celebrations of resilience and faith during Gift Osinya’s graduation, praising what he described as divine intervention in the young man’s life.

“See God!! The God of miracles. The God of second chances. The same God who held Gift and Satrine when darkness tried to swallow them. If this is not God, then what is?” Sonko shared.

Sonko went on to celebrate the milestone, stating, “Today, Gift Osinya graduates from Scott Christian University, a moment only God could write.”

He further described Osinya’s achievement as a sign of divine restoration, adding, “To survive that storm and stand here today is nothing short of divine.”

Gift Osinya and his younger brother, Satrine, survived the 2014 Likoni church attack, which killed their mother and left Satrine with a bullet lodged in his head.

A team of five neurosurgeons safely removed the bullet, with the medical expenses covered by the government and contributions from well-wishers.

At just 13, Gift carried his bleeding brother from the church, a moment captured in a photo that touched the country and sparked national empathy.

The image drew the attention of former Nairobi Governor Mike Sonko, who later adopted the two boys and assumed full responsibility for their medical care, schooling, and emotional recovery.

Gift continued to excel academically, scoring 399 marks in KCPE in 2018, which earned him KSh 399,000 from Sonko, who also pledged KSh 2 million towards his education.

He later joined Lenana School and completed his KCSE exams in 2021 before pursuing a degree in Information Technology at Scott Christian University.

His younger brother, Satrine, continues to thrive and is currently attending St Mary’s School, Nairobi.

Sonko has also adopted Baby James, a boy who witnessed his father’s brutal murder in Mathare, promising him a stable home and education as part a new member of his family.
