Several residents living in Homa Bay, Migori, Nyamira and Kisii counties expressed concerns on Wednesday, December 17, following a presumed earth tremor.
According to Volcano Discovery, a website known for lithosphere information, the tremors were felt from around 11.27 pm and lasted for a few minutes.
Reports indicate that the earth movements were felt in several towns within the four counties, including Oyugis town, which hosts over 200,000 people.
Other towns where the tremor was felt include Nyambunwa, Awendo, Katito, Kebirigo, Sondu, Rongo, Ogembo and parts of Homa Bay town where weak shakings were experienced.
Some of the residents claimed the tremor was characterised by weak movement of the ground, which caused slight shaking of buildings and other structures.
Nonetheless, details of the tremor, including the magnitude and the effect, were yet to be confirmed at the time of publishing this article.
"A possible earthquake might have occurred near Kisii, Homa Bay, Kenya, late in the evening of Wednesday, Dec 17, 2025, at around 11.27 pm local time," Volcano Discovery reported.
"Details of the quake are so far unknown until confirmed by a seismic agency, but the event was felt. We will update the status of the event as soon as more information becomes available," it added.
At the time of reporting, Kenya’s seismic agencies, such as the Kenya Meteorological Department and the National Disaster Management Authority, had not issued an official confirmation.
Nonetheless, reports of such incidents are not unique in Kenya. Earlier this year, on May 7, 2025, residents in Nairobi and surrounding areas also reported a similar occurrence.
Describing their experience, the residents revealed that the tremors occurred in most parts of the city between 10:30 am and 10:40 am, sparking fears among many people.
Some of the areas that were affected by the tremors included Westlands, Parklands, Kangemi, and most parts of the city’s suburbs and satellite towns, including Mlolongo.
