Kenyan Vet David Munyua Makes History as First Kenyan to Win at World Darts Championship

Kenyan darts player David Munyua has become the first Kenyan player in history to win at the 2026 PDC World Darts Championship in Alexandra Palace, London, United Kingdom.

On his debut appearance on December 18, 2025, the 30-year-old defeated Belgium’s Mike De Decker, a top-18-ranked player and the reigning World Grand Prix champion. 

Already familiar with winning, Munyua gained recognition by clinching the African Darts Group Championship, securing his spot in the PDC World Darts Championship.

Mounting a comeback in his first-ever PDC World Darts Championship, Munyua won 3–2 after falling behind by two sets at the beginning of his match.

Despite falling behind during the match, Munyua showed confidence as the game progressed, displaying lively celebrations and relaxed dancing between throws, which ultimately won over the crowd.

The Kenyan won the tense third and fourth sets, forcing a dramatic final set that had fans on their feet due to the dramatic manner in which he won the set.

Speaking after the match, an emotional Munyua admitted he had not anticipated such an outcome.

"It is amazing. I didn't expect it. But now it has happened, and I'm happy about it,” said Munyua.

Munyua, who works full-time as a veterinarian from Kabati, Murang’a County, revealed that the tournament marked his first time travelling outside Africa, making the achievement even more extraordinary.

He said the victory meant more than personal success, describing it as a proud moment for Kenya and African darts.

“It was either do-or-die because Mike is a top player,” beamed Munyua after the match.

By advancing to the second round, David Munyua has guaranteed himself a minimum of Ksh4.3 million in prize money.
