Irate boda boda riders on Sunday evening set ablaze a 65-seater bus after the driver reportedly ran over two people in the Salgaa area in Nakuru County.
According to reports, the accident occurred along the Nairobi-Nakuru highway after the bus, which was heading to Kampala, reportedly struck the duo who were on a motorbike, killing them instantly.
The accident quickly drew the attention of boda boda riders, who began attacking the bus driver before they went ahead to set the vehicle ablaze.
The incident disrupted transport along the ever-busy road, forcing motorists to seek alternative routes. The bus was burnt beyond repair, leaving behind a metallic wreck, but there were no reports of any injuries from the incident.
Footage of the scene, widely shared on social media, showed the bus completely engulfed in flames as people stood at a distance to watch the vehicle burn.
The clips further depicted heavy traffic along the highway, with several vehicles seen lining up as traffic police moved in to address the situation.
The Motorists Association of Kenya (MAK) has since condemned the incident, calling on the National Police Service (NPS) to take action against the perpetrators.
The incident has since raised fresh concerns over the tendency of boda boda riders to resort to mob violence, including burning vehicles after minor accidents.
Just a month ago, a 33-seater minibus was set on fire after the driver of the vehicle reportedly knocked down a person in Juja, Kiambu County.
The incident occurred along Thika Road, near Juja town, after the minibus struck the victim, killing him on the spot. The man said to have been killed is thought to have been a tout, who often operates at bus stops.
The accident quickly attracted the attention of the boda boda riders and residents, who confronted the Public Service Vehicle (PSV) driver before setting the vehicle on fire.
Transport was disrupted along the ever-busy highway that connects Nairobi Central Business District (CBD) and Kiambu County, forcing motorists to seek alternative routes.
