A family in Garissa is pressing for answers after the body of a 25-year-old General Service Unit (GSU) officer was found just metres from the GSU camp where he was stationed at Damajali near the Kenya–Somalia border.
His body was discovered approximately 50 metres from the GSU camp where he was based, an issue that has raised suspicion among family members and local leaders.
One of the leaders stated that he suspected he was murdered by his allies or the workers themselves.
“But we have heard that he was murdered close to the camp. We suspect that he was murdered by close people among the workers themselves,” he stated.
The deceased’s sister also disputed the report, stating that from what she observed, it was not suicide as stated earlier.
Garissa town legislator Dekow Mohamed was also present, and he stated that there was foul play in the murder.
"We highly suspect his death to be very mysterious, and there was foul play in the circumstances in which he died,” the MP stated.
Earlier reports stated that the officer died of suicide, a statement that the family disputed, urging the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) to conduct a thorough and transparent investigation to establish the actual cause of death.
The Garissa case came against the backdrop of police deaths reported under unclear or controversial circumstances in 2025 alone.
In June, a patrol officer from Bondeni Police Station in Nakuru was shot dead while on duty. Although the incident was initially blamed on an ambush by armed gangs, the recovery of an AK-47 rifle and the arrest of multiple suspects, including an ex-convict, raised questions about who shot him.
Earlier in October this year, a GSU officer stationed at Gate D of State House in Nairobi was killed after being struck with a spear during an alleged intrusion attempt.
Within the same period, another GSU officer guarding the JKIA perimeter wall reportedly died after being strangled by a civilian.
Samples from the deceased were taken to the government laboratory for analysis before the exact cause was established.
