UDA Secretary General and EALA MP Hassan Omar Hassan has led tributes following the death of Mombasa-born comedian Basheikh Abdallah Basheikh, also known as Abdallah Moi, who was famed for his impressions of Daniel Arap Moi.
In a statement on Tuesday, December 23, the former senator said Abdallah Moi was more than an entertainer since he played a role in shaping Coast humour and inspiring young creatives.
Abdallah Moi rose to prominence through his particular voice-mimicking skills, most notably his impersonations of former President Daniel arap Moi.
Abdallah Moi's mimicry of former President Daniel Arap Moi became a defining feature of his comedy, earning him a nationwide following.
Born in Mombasa's Old Town in 1969, Abdallah Moi grew up and was schooled in Mombasa until he discovered his passion for comedy.
"For those of us who grew up in Mombasa," the UDA Secretary General's statement read, "Abdallah Moi's humour was part of our shared memory and cultural fabric."
Omar extended his condolences to the comedian’s family, friends, and the wider creative community.
Nyali MP, Mohammed 'Jicho Pevu' Ali, also shared a statement mourning the popular comedian's passing.
"His (Abdalla Moi's) voice, along with his personality, could stop anyone on the street looking to have a light moment of laughter and pure joy," the Nyali MP described their encounters.
Governor Abdulswamad Sheriff Nassir of Mombasa was also not left behind in extending his heartfelt condolences, those of the County Government, and Mombasa residents to the family, friends, and the entire creative community.
"Abdallah Moi used laughter as a powerful bridge, uniting communities, preserving out rich Swahili culture, and reminding us of the beauty of our shared humanity," the Governor's statement read.
The Mombasa leaders offered prayers for forgiveness and eternal peace. "May Allah forgive his shortcomings, accept his good deeds and grant him Jannah," both leaders requested of Allah.
Abdallah Moi’s death marks the loss of a distinct comedic voice that helped shape Kenya’s popular culture, particularly at the Coast, where his influence remains deeply felt.
Abdallah Moi's death comes months after Comedian KK Mwenyewe, popular for his mimicry of former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua, passed away after a short bout of illness.
