Kenya Met Lists 14 Counties to Experience Heavy Rains & Potential Flooding Before New Year

Residents in several parts of the country including Nairobi have been urged to brace for heavy rainfall and potential flooding ahead of the new year.

In a heavy rain alert dated Friday, December 26, the Kenya Meteorological Department noted that several regions are set to experience intensified rainfall on December 28 and  30.

Counties that are likely to be affected include  Migori, Homa Bay, Kisii, Narok, Kajiado, Makueni, Machakos, Nairobi, Kericho, Bomet, the Southern parts of Kitui, and Taita-Taveta and Kwale.

The  likelihood of the heavy rainfall occurring during this period, according to the weatherman,  stands at between 33 and 66 per cent, classifying it as moderate to heavy.

The department projects that the rain will begin to subside in intensity from December 30. 

"Heavy rainfall of more than 20mm in 24 hours is expected in parts of the southeastern lowlands on 27th December 2025," the alert read

"The rainfall is likely to intensify to more than 30mm/24hrs and spread to parts of the Highlands West and East of the Rift Valley, Lake Victoria Basin, as well as the Southern parts of the Coastal region of Kenya on 28th and 29th December 2025," it added.

As per the latest forecast covering Friday, December 26, and Monday, December 29, other parts of the country will be relatively hot and dry.

Mombasa, Kilifi, Lamu, and Kwale counties, as well as coastal parts of Tana River County, will particularly experience showers and hot conditions for most of the week, apart from Friday and Saturday morning and afternoon.

These counties are expected to be a bit hotter, recording maximum temperatures of 34°C and minimum temperatures of 23°C.

Daylong sunny intervals will be experienced in Marsabit, Mandera, Wajir, Garissa, and Isiolo counties during this period, as well as Turkana and Samburu counties.

Strong southeasterly winds of 25 knots are set to hit Marsabit County in the next five days, according to the department.

"Occasional rainfall is expected over the southern half of the country. Rainfall intensity is likely to increase as the forecast period progresses. Strong southeasterly winds, exceeding 25 knots (12.5 m/s), are anticipated over Marsabit counties," the department stated.
