Former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua's Democracy for the Citizens Party (DCP) has broken its silence hours after Juja Member of Parliament George Koimburi joined President William Ruto's camp.
In a statement on Thursday, January 15, DCP dismissed claims of Koimburi's defection from the party, insisting that the latter has never been its member and has never been involved in party activities.
According to the party, despite having been Gachagua's close ally, Koimburi had never accompanied him in any public function for the last six months, while allegedly giving all manner of excuses.
The opposition party went ahead to disclose details of Koimburi's last phone call with Gachagua, in which the lawmaker requested an urgent meeting with the former DP.
"On Monday morning, January 12, 2026, Hon. Koimburi placed a call to our party leader and requested an urgent appointment with him, saying that he was stressed and wanted some clarification," the DCP party revealed.
Gachagua granted his request and Koimburi met him in his private office at 5 pm same day, accompanied by the Deputy National Chairperson of DCP, Peter Mwathi.
Koimburi is said to have reportedly expressed his disbelief and annoyance that his competitor in the last general elections, Aloise Kinyanjui, had been allowed to join DCP.
The lawmaker further expressed betrayal that, despite having voted against Gachagua's impeachment and standing with the party leader in all instances, a competitor was being entertained in the party.
During the meeting, Koimburi allegedly demanded that Aloise Kinyanjui be removed from the party and that he be given a written assurance that he would be given a direct nomination.
He further demanded that he be exempted from attending public functions with Gachagua until February next year to slow down the prosecution of the various criminal cases facing him.
"He threatened to move back to rejoin William Ruto if his conditions were not met. The party leader thanked him for having stood with him during the impeachment and after," read part of DCP's statement.
Nonetheless, according to the party, politely informed that his request for direct nomination could not be met as DCP is a democratic party and all those who intend to fly its flag for all positions would be determined in fair party nominations.
Meanwhile, DCP's clarification comes hours after Koimburi announced his exit from the party, accusing the party leadership of alleged corruption, intimidation and sidelining some members.
Addressing the press on Wednesday, January 14, He alleged that he had been treated unfairly despite being loyal to the party and its leadership from the beginning.
"We who have been there are pushed aside, and so I am appealing to my people to be cautious of these criminal parties because this DCP party, especially inside Kiambu county," Koimburi stated.
He went on to add, "They have shown criminal tendencies and collecting money from people's pockets so that they can offer the people party tickets to vie," he stated."
