Education Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiang'i Stops Kenyan Universities from Opening Satellite Campuses

A new directive by Education CS Fred Matiang'i has halted Kenyan universities from opening new satellite campuses.

Dr Matiang’i stated that satellite campuses were watering down education standards.

Matiang’i accused the universities of using the campuses to engage in malpractice by not following the set procedures on admission, teaching and standards of facilities.

The CS revealed that several satellite campuses were in serious breach of educational standards by acting as conduits to admit ineligible students.

Matiang’i revealed that an earlier audit had exposed a system where the campuses were bending the law by giving degrees and some honorary degrees to undeserving cases.

He highlighted that Kenya needs at least 1,000 PhD's to effectively drive academics and research in institutions.

The CS has been leading a reform agenda on the sector that has seen a Kenyan satellite campus in Rwanda saying it was opened illegally.

It is, however, not clear whose satellite campus was it, considering that several Kenyan institutions have campuses in the country including Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology (JKUAT)
