Government agencies have revealed that 33 suspects have so far been arrested for allegedly planning past terror attacks in the country.

This was disclosed by Tana River deputy county commissioner Michael Kioni who divulged that the 33, among them foreigners, were apprehended on two separate incidents.

In the first incident, security agencies intercepted 20 men who were travelling by road to attack carry out an ambush during the 2016 Jamhuri day celebrations in Hola.

Senior government officials including Tana River Governor Hussein Dado and County Commissioner Isaiah Nakoru are said to have been the targets of the foiled attack.

In a separate incident which took place two months ago, police nabbed 13 people who were planning to attack Bura trading centre.

Kioni attributed the success of the two operations to good cooperation between the public and security agencies who responded to intelligence reports.

These revelations came as government continues to step up efforts to eliminate Somalia-based Al Shabaab militants.

Recently, President Uhuru Kenyatta announced that the Kenya Defence Forces (KDF) will remain in Somalia in attempts to neutralise the terrorists.
