Uhuru Kenyatta and Raila Odinga to Meet in IEBC Presidential Candidates Pre-nomination Meeting

President Uhuru Kenyatta and his political rival, Opposition leader Raila Odinga will today meet when they both attend the presidential candidates pre-nomination meeting organised by the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC).

The meeting to be chaired by IEBC Chairperson Wafula Chebukati will also be attended by all the other remaining presidential aspirants including;  Ekuro Aukot, Joe Nyagah and Cyrus Jirongo.

According to the IEBC, the meeting to be held at Lilian towers in Nairobi will majorly focus on election matters where the candidates would be briefed on the upcoming elections.

Mr Chebukati, in a notice to the candidates, explained that the meeting would also clarify legal issues and share the programme of activities and expectations from candidates during the nomination and emphasise the role of candidates in ensuring peaceful elections.

The Chairperson also noted that the meeting would deliberate on the schedule for presentation of nomination papers where presidential candidates were required to submit their papers for clearance to the elections body either on Sunday or Monday next week.

This would be the first time President Kenyatta and the former premier are meeting to discuss electoral matters since the disbandment of the Isaac Hassan-led IEBC team.

The meeting comes only a few weeks after NASA issued threats to boycott the elections if IEBC would not withdraw a case it filed at the Court of Appeal to challenge a regulation allowing announcement of presidential results at the constituency.

On Friday, the Head of State rebuked NASA for threatening to boycott elections saying: “People should concentrate on looking for votes peacefully instead of threatening the IEBC and the Judiciary. If you believe people will buy your agenda, you do not have to use threats and intimidation.”

IEBC will also hold similar but separate meetings in all 47 counties and 290 constituencies between all elective candidates and the commission's returning officers.
