Multimedia University of Kenya Student Arrested Allegedly Assembling Explosive Device

A third-year Multimedia University of Kenya student was arrested by police on suspicion of assembling an Improvised Explosive Device (IED) at the University premises.

Speaking to Kenyans.co.ke, the University's Student leader, Robin Boit refuted claims that the student identified as Joseph Kamau, who was detained at Karen Hardy Police Station, had assembled an IED.

Boit noted that the student specialises in Film Animation and was using the equipment which had a computer motherboard with capacitors connected to it as part of his class project.

"It was a class project that the student was doing, but now the type of project he was working on sounded like the one for handling al-Shabaab. The devices he was using were the ones raising eyebrows," the student leader noted.

Kamau was arrested over the weekend after he reported that he had lost his project which had already been seized by bomb detectives.

Addressing the issue, Nairobi Police Commander Japheth Koome on Thursday noted that they were carrying out investigations to determine whether the device was a school project or not.

"The student said he was working on a project which he had lost. We linked it to the device found at the university on Saturday," Koome stated.

This comes after Inspector General Joseph Boinnet ordered the police to step up surveillance across the country following the UK terror attack where 22 people were killed during a concert by American pop star Ariana Grande.

Boinnet also urged members of the public to be on the lookout and imploring them to report "anything suspicious".
