ODM Governor Cyprian Awiti Attacked in Homa Bay While Campaigning for Raila Odinga

A campaign convoy that was drumming up support for NASA flag bearer Raila Odinga in Nyanza was Thursday attacked by rowdy youth in Homa Bay County.

The Opposition team led by Homa Bay Governor Cyprian Awiti was violently attacked by the agitated youth who blocked the convoy.

Trouble started when the crowd began chanting "Tiacha" a slogan associated with Awiti's main rival Kasipul Member of Parliament (MP) Joseph Oyugi Magwanga who has since ditched ODM.

The meeting degenerated into chaos, forcing police to shoot in the air to disperse the crowd that had blocked the convoy with the intention of attacking the ODM governor.

The determined youth resisted police intervention and only dispersed after several tear-gas canisters were lobbed in the air.

No serious casualties were reported in the incident that has exposed the silent rebellion in the region.

Odinga's troubles seem to have been worsened by the shambolic ODM nominations in the region with voters and aspirants accusing top party leadership of interfering in the exercise and forcing leaders on them.

Recently, Raila disowned independent candidates who had defected from ODM, urging voters from the region to shun them.

This worsened the situation with Odinga receiving a backlash from aspirants as well as voters.
