Director of ICT at IEBC Sent on Compulsory Leave Over Sabotage

A senior official at the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) has been sent on compulsory leave after it was discovered that he had been sabotaging ongoing processes.

The Director of ICT at the electoral body, James Muhati, was sent home for one month, at a time when the electoral body is racing against time to deliver free, fair and credible elections.

The body reached the decision at a closed-door meeting that was attended by all the commissioners with Chairman Wafula Chebukati signing the memo that sent him home.

Muhati was accused of refusing to cooperate in an on-going audit of the ICT systems at the institution.

Audit, Risk and Compliance Director Obadiah Keitany was the first to raise issues in a memo dated 17th May.

In the memo, he accused the Director of refusing to cooperate on authentication of the commission's software and hardware licenses and certificates.

The body appointed Chris Msando to take over the roles of the ICT director.

A member of the Commission revealed that sending Muhati home was the beginning of a crackdown at the electoral body as it seeks to weed out officials failing in their duties particularly in the procurement department.

The department has been accused of bungling major tenders with some ending up contested in court and cancelled.
