Section of Standard Gauge Railway Destroyed at Mariakani on Friday Night

A section of the Standard Gauge Railway (SGR) was on Friday night vandalised by unknown people just days before its historic launch.

According to photos circulating on social media, part of the side bars were destroyed at Mariakani area along the route Nairobi-Mombasa route.

Confirming the incident, Kenya Railways Managing Director Atanas Maina affirmed that investigations were underway to determine the cause of the damage.

This comes four days before the historic launch of the multi-billion project on May 31 which will be presided over by President Uhuru Kenyatta.

The project, which is one of the main achievements of the Jubilee government, is set to cut transport cost and travel time from Mombasa to Nairobi.

President Kenyatta will lead Kenyans in taking the inaugural ride aboard the high-speed train on May 31.

The symbolic journey from Mombasa to Nairobi will usher a new dawn for Kenya and mark the beginning of a revolutionised transport sector in the country.

The 472 Km SGR line is Kenya’s largest single infrastructure project since independence, constructed at a cost of Sh327 Billion co-financed through commercial and semi-concessional loans from China and the Government of Kenya.
