National Super Alliance (NASA) Principal Kalonzo Musyoka Reveals Independent Candidates Pose Threat to Coalition

National Super Alliance (NASA) principal and Wiper Democratic Movement party leader Kalonzo Musyoka on Saturday admitted that the resurgence of independent candidates was a threat to mainstream parties.

Speaking when he met candidates seeking elective office in Kitui on a Wiper ticket, Mr Kalonzo acknowledged that independent candidates were a real threat to the major political parties ahead of the August 8 polls.

Kalonzo stated that if the mainstream parties were not careful they would be eclipsed by the independents at the polls.

He noted that that parties including NASA had not adequately prepared for the fallout that followed the primaries held last month, April.

“If you’re not careful you can end up with a political party which has got all the votes for President and the deputy but all other seats have gone to this party called independents,

“I think this concept of independent candidates was not adequately addressed at the level of the national assembly,” cautioned Kalonzo.

The former Vice President reiterated that Wiper party was looking to consolidate its numbers in their perceived strongholds and countrywide ahead of the general election.

According to records from the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) and highlighted by the Registrar of Political Parties Lucy Ndung’u, over 4,000 independent candidates would be on the ballot come August, an increase from 350 independent candidates in the 2013 general elections.

NASA presidential candidate Raila Odinga had last week declared voters should reject the independent candidates for going against the wishes of the people after being floored in the primaries.
