President Uhuru Kenyatta officially endorsed Senator Mike Sonko for the Nairobi governorship race while on his way to present his nomination papers at KICC on Monday.
In the highly hyped rally, Kenyatta declared “Sonko tosha” even inviting the Senator on the hood of his vehicle to address thousands of Jubilee supporters.
Aspiring Nairobi Governor Peter Kenneth, who lost to Sonko in the Jubilee nominations, was present alongside other independent candidates and NARC-Kenya leader Martha Karua as supporters of Kenyatta’s bid to regain his presidency.
Before the Jubilee nominations, President Kenyatta had publicly endorsed Kenneth for the governorship and asked for people to vote for him.
Sonko clinched the Jubilee ticket in a landslide victory and surely the Jubilee bosses changed their tune soon after. The former Gatanga MP claimed there was massive rigging that saw the seat stolen from him and decided to run as an independent candidate.
The procession that started from Eastlands attracted mammoth crowds as the Jubilee aspirants and their supporters snaked their way from Pipeline to Donholm using Jogoo Road to get to the City Centre.
Sonko has been gaining popularity steadily in Nairobi for the governorship especially after he picked Vivo Energy Kenya MD Polycarp Igathe as his running mate.
A recent poll by Radio Africa Group showed Sonko would win the Nairobi governor’s race with 45% followed by Kidero with 35%. Kenneth came a distant third with 9%.
