Five suspects have been arrested barely a day before the historic launch of the Standard Gauge Railway and could now face life imprisonment.
The five were nabbed on allegations of destroying the SGR material and could be charged with capital offences.
This is after the Director of Public Prosecutions Keriako Tobiko stated that anyone found to have been involved in the incident would be arraigned before the court to face severe charges, adding that they would be charged with appropriate capital offences.
"All those identified and apprehended will face the full force of the law and will be charged and prosecuted not as petty thieves but as organised criminals and economic saboteurs," Mr Tobiko announced.
Four of the suspects who were arrested on Tuesday were scrap metal dealers and were caught with SGR metal rails in Voi Town.
On Monday, a scrap metal dealer was apprehended after he was caught with a haul of SGR material which he was selling in Mariakani, Kilifi County.
The hunt for the suspects began after a section of the Railway was vandalised on Friday night by unknown people, days before its historic launch.
Photos circulating on social media showed that part of the sidebars had been destroyed.
