Are these the Last Men Standing in the Kenyatta, Odinga, Moi and Mudavadi Families?

Talking of Kenyan politics, the Odinga, the Kenyatta, the Moi and the Mudavadi families have dominated the scene for quite a very long time.

Common among all these dominant political families is the fact that they inherited political following and power from their parents or families.

Kenyatta Family

This is the only family to have produced two presidents. President Uhuru Kenyatta will be defending his seat in a tight race and is still considerably young to stay active in politics even if he loses the race.

However, it is still not clear who among the Kenyattas will take over when Uhuru retires. None of his three children Jomo Kenyatta, Jaba Kenyatta and Ngina Kenyatta has shown interest in politics.

Odinga Family

The family is known for producing the first vice president and a prime minister. Raila Odinga emerged strongly after the death of his father Jaramogi Oginga in 1994, inheriting massive following from Nyanza and grew the influence nationally.

Having declared that this will be the last time he will be contesting for the presidency, he is set to retire soon.

He has three children, Rosemary Odinga, Raila Junior and Winnie Odinga. Rosemary had declared interest in the Kibra parliamentary seat but pulled out of the race citing doctor's advice.

However, the Odinga kingdom could be forgotten as none of his children had declared a strong interest in politics.

Moi Family

Daniel Moi who served as Kenya's second president and vice president retired from politics in 2002. His family was dealt a blow after all his sons lost elections in 2007.

However, Gideon Moi rose to reclaim the political following after he won the Baringo senatorial race. He is currently working on building his following in readiness for 2022.

However, should he lose the Baringo senatorial race, the family will be out of politics for some time with no clear heir. Gideon has three children, Kimoi, Kigen and Lulu.

Mudavadi

The legacy of the Mudavadi family rests on former vice president Musalia Mudavadi who entered into politics after the death of his father Moses Mudamba Mudavadi in 1989.

The Amani National Congress leader is in a race to remain politically relevant and this could best be achieved if NASA wins. None of his children has declared an interest in politics.

He has three children Maryanne Mudavadi, Moses Mudavadi and Michael Mudavadi.
