Cereal Millers Association Warn of Increased Maize Flour Prices

The Cereal Miller Association on Tuesday warned that the price of maize flour could shoot up as there was no sufficient maize supply in the country.

The Association Chairperson Mr Nick Hutchinson while addressing the Parliamentary committee on agriculture explained that millers lacked maize in their stores and that the country was heavily relying on maize imported from Mexico.

"All Millers have run out of maize. We are all waiting for the next vessel to arrive. The end of May is tight and we also suspect the end of June is going to be tight," he stated.

The Chairperson explained that although the second batch of maize had docked at the Mombasa port on Tuesday, there was still a serious challenge as offloading could take a long time.

Mr Hutchinson warned that the lack of steady supply could lead to increase in prices of Unga in the country

"Lack of steady supply could see the prices of unga rise to Sh135 per 2kg packet of flour," Hutchinson stated.

Other maize millers who addressed the committee urged the Members of Parliament to put a law in place to ensure maize farmers get government subsidies.

Earlier this month, the government announced that it had subsidised maize flour prices where a 2Kg bag was expected to retail at Sh90, 1Kg for Sh47 and a 90kg bag of maize for Sh 3,200.
