A storm is brewing at the Coast after Jubilee officials accused Nominated Senator Beth Mugo, who is President Uhuru Kenyatta's cousin, of mishandling the party’s affairs in the region.
Led by Mvita Jubilee branch official Matano Chengo, the leaders accused Senator Mugo of hand-picking individuals as coordinators without consulting the officials in the area.
Chengo stated that Ms Mugo had ignored officials working for Jubilee and unilaterally handpicked the presidential coordinators.
“Jubilee is not a family affair. She cannot come here and select campaign coordinators without consulting us. We have to consult on how to conduct campaigns in Mombasa,” said Chengo.
Ms Mugo had earlier in the day introduced Jubilee Activist Farid Swaleh as head of regional campaigns during an Iftar-cum-opening of the Coast region presidential coordination office. Iftar is the meal eaten by Muslims after sunset during Ramadhan.
The meeting was however snubbed by Jubilee bigwigs including Jubilee gubernatorial aspirant Suleiman Shahbal and Mombasa woman representative Amina Abdallah.
Explaining their conspicuous absence from the event, Chengo stated that he and Shahbal had attended an Iftar organised by Muslim leaders elsewhere and the invitation to Mugo's event came late.
Senator Mugo called on the Muslim leaders at the event to rally support for the re-election of President Kenyatta.
She dismissed the Opposition's claim that Coast region was an Opposition zone and noted that Jubilee would carry the day during the General Election.
