Opposition Leader Raila Odinga to Oppose Sh2.5 Billion Ballot Paper Tender

National Super Alliance (NASA) flag bearer Raila Odinga has warned the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) against awarding a Sh2.5 Billion ballot paper tender to a Dubai-based firm with the elections just two months away.

Odinga stated that it was strange that the electoral body was pushing for the awarding of the tender to Al Ghurair yet there are many other companies that can deliver the same service.

Speaking on Wednesday at his Capitol Hill offices, the Opposition Chief vowed to oppose the tender, also expressing concern about the happenings at the IEBC following the removal of two senior managers.

"We are concerned about the sackings of officials and ordering of ballot papers.

"It seems as though it's only one company that can manufacturer ballot papers in the world and we don't want to believe that we must only buy the ballots from Al Ghurair; there is something sinister," he said.

He also claimed that there were elements at the IEBC who were determined to award the tender to Al Ghurair through single sourcing on grounds that it's the only bidder with the capacity to do the work, terming the move unacceptable.

Members of the Opposition, through their flag-bearer, are set to release a comprehensive statement to express their concerns about the electoral agency's preparedness for the polls.

Earlier this week, the dismissal of Director of Procurement Lawy Aura was made public and he was allegedly sent home for delaying major procurement deals, among them the Sh2.5 billion tender for ballot papers.

He was the second top official to be shown the door after the dismissal of ICT Director James Muhati on grounds of sabotaging an internal audit.
