Telkom Kenya Set to Terminate Orange Money Mobile Transfer Service

Telkom Kenya is set to terminate operations on its mobile money transfer platform Orange Money within the month of June.

A message sent to the network's five million customers alerted them of the new changes giving them a 30-day prior notice.

"Dear customer, in 30 days, Orange Money services will no longer be available and will not be accessible via the SMS menu and *144#," the message read.

The newly rebranded service provider has asked customers who will not have withdrawn their funds by July 5th to access them through any branch of Equity Bank.

Additionally, 800 agents working with the service will be put out of business as the changes are effected.

One of the reasons cited for the closure is the platform's limited capacity in the transactions a customer can perform.

Other reports indicate that the brand is set to launch a new platform in July even as the industry is set for interoperability, with the different operators able to share the mobile money infrastructure.
