Kenya National Integrity Alliance Orders IEBC to Block All Blacklisted Candidates

The Kenya National Integrity Alliance on Thursday ordered the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) to block the 106 aspirants blacklisted by the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) from running in the August elections.

The Alliance noted the 106 aspirants who include Mombasa Governor Hassan Joho, Nairobi Senator Mike Sonko, Nairobi Governor Evans Kidero and former Devolution Cabinet Secretary Anne Waiguru among others should be flagged as they were accused of having integrity issues.

The activists' body argued that the elections body had the powers and the constitutional right not to gazette the aspirants as they were interfering with the implementation of Chapter six of the Kenyan Constitution.

Transparency International Executive Director Mr Samuel Kimeu explained that even though the polls body had cleared the aspirants and issued them with certificates, they still had the power to flag them down when compiling the final list.

“Even though the certificates have been issued, we know the final list of candidates that will be on the ballot is yet to be gazetted by the IEBC.

“Only those candidates of unquestionable integrity should be cleared to run for office in August,” Kimeu stated.

Last week, EACC issued IEBC with names of 106 individuals who had integrity issues in their files at the anti-graft body.

The list of the blacklisted aspirants comprises of 11 aspirants running for the governorship, one for Senate, two for County Woman Representative, 13 for National Assembly seats, and 14 for the Member of the County Assembly.

Earlier on, the Kenya National Integrity Alliance had also red carded 20 aspirants who they deemed not fit to run for public office.
