Tension in Meru as Protesters Block Nkubu-Meru Road Ahead of Governor Peter Munya's Rally

Tension is high in Meru County after rowdy youth barricaded the busy Nkubu-Meru road allegedly protesting a meeting by Meru Governor Peter Munya in the area.

Anti- riot police officers were deployed to the scene to quell the chaos after the youth blocked the route using stones and set tyres on fire.

Confirming the incident, Central Imenti OCPD Boniface Lisiolo stated that police officers had contained the situation.

Lisiolo added that they were probing the incident to ascertain if politicians are behind the protest that occurred early Saturday morning.

Governor Munya is scheduled to address a campaign rally for his re-election at Nkubu Stadium later today.

Munya has in the past weeks along with his arch rival Meru Senator Kiraitu Murungi intensified campaigns as each tried to outwit the other in a do or die duel ahead of the August polls.

Murungi had last week sought police intervention over accusations that the incumbent governor was sabotaging his campaign.

He claimed that he had erected billboards from Meru town to Nakumatt shopping mall worth over Sh300,000, but had been defaced by his rival for the seat.

Governor Munya dismissed the claims, stating that Kiraitu was trying to intimidate him by using police and provincial administration to intimidate him and his supporters ahead of the August 8 polls.
