Armed Bandits Invade President Uhuru Kenyatta's Elgeyo Marakwet Rally

President Uhuru Kenyatta's security team on Saturday had to look for alternatives to secure the President after they had to divert the flight to a nearby area in what completely dismantled earlier plans.

Moments before landing in Elgeyo Marakwet, Uhuru’s helicopters had to do a number of oscillations on air due to gunshots from a short distance to where he was supposed to land.

President Kenyatta's Elgeyo Marakwet tour was marred by bandit attacks and hostility in Chesongoch and Chepkorio.

In Chesongoch, a herder was shot in the right hand and seriously wounded by attackers just a few kilometers from where the President was addressing his supporters.

Marakwet East police boss said Lemmy Njiru stated that the herder was looking after his livestock when the bandits, whose number was not established, raided the area.

“They crossed to Baringo with seven cows. Police officers are pursuing them. We are confident about recovering the animals since our officers followed them immediately,” Njiru said.

The bandits are said to have capitalized on a security lapse as police and reservists secured Uhuru's rally.

At a separate event in Chepkorio, President Kenyatta's event was disrupted as supporters of Elgeyo Marakwet Governor Alex Tolgos (Jubilee Party) and Moses Changwon (Independent) clashed during the rally.

President Kenyatta on his part noted that his government was committed to providing security to all Kenyans to create an environment that fostered development and growth.

"Security is the most important thing. When you have peace, you can invest in infrastructure," the President stated.

The President spoke as he completed his Rift Valley tour on Saturday.
