NASA Presidential Candidate Raila Odinga's Demand on IEBC That Could Lead to Cancellation of August General Election

National Super Alliance (NASA) presidential candidate Raila Odinga has demanded that the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) reconsiders its choice of the firm to supply ballot papers for the August elections.

The Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) party leader termed as an act of bad faith how the IEBC awarded the Sh2.5 Billion tender to Dubai-based Al-Ghurair company.

Mr Odinga's new demand comes a day after IEBC Chief Executive Officer Ezra Chiloba warned that the country risked not having the General Election in August if any further court injunctions barred the awarding of the tender.

"If someone went to court today and challenges this, the question we should be asking ourselves is whether we will have the election in August," Mr Chiloba told Members of Parliament.

The NASA presidential candidate further condemned the move stating that the process was not consultative and did not consider the concerns raised by the opposition concerning the firm.

Raila had asserted that the Opposition will move to court to block the awarding of the tender and is yet to make good on the threat.

The IEBC has maintained its position cautioning the court against allowing for the petition, claiming that it will be a major setback to the preparations for the election.

"As a country, we owe the nation an explanation and we need to emphasise that as IEBC goes to make the last printing, we need the understanding of the Judiciary despite it being independent that if the process is tampered with we are risking telling Kenyans that we will have no election on August 8. We are not giving directives to the Judiciary but we are just conscious of the time we have," Mr Chiloba maintained.
