Jubilee and KANU Supporters Clash as President Uhuru Kenyatta and DP William Ruto Visit West Pokot

The tension between Jubilee and Kenya Africa National Union (KANU) supporters erupted into a physical confrontation in Kapenguria, West Pokot ahead of the President Uhuru Kenyatta's visit.

Trouble began when supporters of the two parties, which back Kenyatta's re-election, clashed in front of the dais where the President was to address the forum.

One person was seriously injured and rushed to hospital with Kenyatta and his deputy scheduled to address a rally in the same venue later on in the day.

A contingent of police officers was called in to restore calm before the Head of State's arrival.

Recently, the sour relations between the two parties has come in the open with KANU leaders demanding respect from their Jubilee counterparts and giving the party an ultimatum of one week to address the issues raised, failure to which they would take unspecified action.

West Pokot Governor Simon Kachapin will be defending his seat on a Jubilee ticket against KANU's John Lonyangapuo.

The race will be one of the key ones as KANU seeks to position itself in place to front its chairman Gideon Moi for the 2022 presidential race.

Analysts and political leaders have warned that the rivalry between the two parties could deny President Kenyatta the much-needed votes to win the presidency.

The National Super Alliance (NASA), on the other hand, has taken advantage of the situation and is keen to bag as many votes as possible from the region.

Last week, NASA leaders camped in the area to woo voters and received a warm reception.
