Rescue Operation in Pipeline Estate to Take Four Days, 3 Rescued

A mother and her two children were on Tuesday rescued from the rubble of a building that collapsed in Nairobi's Pipeline estate.

According to an update about the incident, the three were pulled out alive in the ongoing rescue operation led by the National Disaster Management Unit (NDMU).

At the same time, a body was also retrieved shortly after with reports indicating that a few people were still trapped following the Monday night accident.

Deputy Director of Communication at NDMU Pius Mwachi, announced that the rescue operation would last at least three to four days due to the complexities in accessing the scene of the disaster.

"The operation will still go on for days. There are other buildings surrounding the collapsed building, one of them is weak and denying us space," stated the Director.

The seven-storey building on Monday night collapsed at Kware area, in the densely populated Pipeline estate, Nairobi.

Embakasi police boss stated that 121 people had been accounted for but the whereabouts of a few others were still unknown.

Reports from rescue teams that include Kenya Red Cross and the St John Ambulance indicate that 15 people are feared to have been trapped under the rubble.
