2 Police Officers Killed, 4 Injured Responding to KDF Attacks

Two police officers were reportedly killed and four others injured when a vehicle they were travelling in hit an Improvised Explosive Device (IED).

The officers are said to have been responding to an earlier attack on a KDF base in Kulbiyow, Somalia staged by Al Shabaab militants.

Reports indicate that the officers were in the company of another convoy which had been deployed to assist the KDF soldiers in order to repulse the militants.

Unfortunately, their vehicle hit the IED which went off leading to the casualties.

The assault started in the wee hours of Friday morning when the militants drove a vehicle-borne improvised explosive device (VBEID) into the camp manned by the Kenyan soldiers and tried to take over the area.

According to the military spokesman,  the servicemen swiftly responded leading to a heavy gunfight that went on for the better part of the day.

At first, al-Shabaab told the media that they had run over the base, killed more than 50 soldiers and destroyed military equipment.

This was contradicted by KDF Spokesman Colonel Paul Njuguna who described the militant's statement as propaganda, maintaining that the fighters did not gain access to the camp. He added that the soldiers had repulsed the enemy and pacification operations were ongoing.

He assured that a full report about the situation, including those of any casualties would be divulged later, once the operation was concluded.
