Eight children from various schools in Maseno, Kisumu were charged in court and sent to prison on Monday after they were found with crude weapons.
The eight were arrested on Friday night by patrol police officers after they were allegedly caught with knives and machetes.
Maseno Senior Principal Magistrate Dolphine Okundi heard that the pupils were on their way to a teacher's funeral but could not explain what they were doing with the weapons.
The minors were in the company of a 19-year-old secondary school student who tried to disguise himself as a child before a doctor certified him as an adult.
"The doctors have found out that apart from the first eight suspects, the 9th is a 19-year-old and will be charged as an adult," the Magistrate stated.
Each child was slapped with Sh100,000 bond and sureties of the same amount but their guardians could not afford to raise the money.
The secondary school student was handed Sh300,000 bond with a similar surety.
Some of the parents of the eight begged the court not to take their children back to the cells but their pleas bore no fruit.
