Boda Boda Rider Killed Over Campaign Money in Othaya

A boda-boda rider in Othaya, Nyeri County, was discovered stabbed and buried in what police believe was caused by a disagreement over sharing of campaign money.

The body of the rider, who was identified as Joseph Githaiga, was discovered in a shallow grave a few kilometres from Othaya town.

According to the residents, children are the ones who noticed a pool of blood on the road and upon further investigations, the body was discovered at a nearby farm.

“We followed the (blood) trail to a part of the farm that was freshly dug at around 7 am,” stated Mr Patrick Gatheru, who is local in the town.

The residents later dug and discovered a shoe and informed the police who dug out the body of the deceased.

Upon initial investigations, police discovered that Gatheru had been stabbed on the back of his head.

The detectives speculated that the rider was most likely killed by people known to him.

Othaya OCPD Joseph Mwika stated that the death may have occurred during sharing of money dished out at a political rally.

He added that they were questioning other boda-boda riders though the police could not confirm how much money was in contention.

“Young men, especially boda-boda riders are being used in political campaigns and often they fight over the money,” explained the police boss.
