Uhuru Kenyatta's Driver Joseph Njuguna Reveals Why He Lost State House Job

A former police officer who worked at State House and chauffeured Uhuru Kenyatta and his brother Muhoho Kenyatta has revealed the mistake that cost him his job.

Speaking to a local daily, Joseph Njuguna, 74, stated that he used to enjoy his job at State House chauffeuring the sons of the then President, Mzee Jomo Kenyatta to school.

Njuguna said that he would drive Uhuru and Muhoho to St Mary's School in Muthangari, Nairobi, in the 1970s.

"Other than the jokes, I always encouraged Uhuru to concentrate on his studies...I always knew Uhuru would end up in politics. He had all his father's qualities. I even told him he would end up in politics," Njuguna told The Standard.

He, however, disclosed that his lucrative position came to a sudden halt after an incident where he drove Jomo Kenyatta despite not being the President's official driver.

The former police officer said that one morning he was ordered by then State House Comptroller Eliud Mathu to deliver a hat and a pair of spectacles to Mzee Kenyatta's Gatundu home.

"I arrived in Gatundu and gave the items to Kenyatta's bodyguards. They told me to park the vehicle and await further instructions.

But after 30 minutes, the President's driver requested Njuguna to stand in for him. He thought it was a joke, obliged and remained alert.

President Kenyatta's aides soon came out and ordered him to get ready to drive the head of State to Ichaweri, a kilometre away.

Njuguna said he gladly drove the President but when his seniors discovered what he had done, they were furious and ordered him to proceed to the Industrial Police Station for redeployment.

"They wondered why it had to be me yet there were many senior drivers on standby. Some of them had never driven him despite having been at State House for years," added Njuguna.

He declined and opted to resign from the police force in protest.
