IEBC Chairman Wafula Chebukat Rejects Calls to Cancel Ballot Paper Tender to Dubai-based Firm Al Ghurair

The Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) Chairman Wafula Chebukati on Tuesday announced that the August 8 election would go on even if the National Super Alliance (NASA) pulled out.

Chebukati declared this after he rejected calls to cancel the Sh2.5 Million ballot paper tender awarded to Dubai-based firm Al Ghurair.

IEBC awarded the ballot-paper tender to Al Ghurair despite complaints from Opposition leaders.

The firm is set to print about 120 Million ballot papers to be used in the August 8 polls.

Meanwhile, Catholic Bishops have urged the IEBC against forcing through the ballot printing contract, calling for dialogue or cancellation if there is no consensus.

Last week, NASA presidential candidate Raila Odinga claimed the Jubilee administration influenced the awarding of the ballot paper tender to the Dubai-based company.

The NASA leader revealed that he had information that a series of meetings had taken place between the Company and Jubilee Party officials.

He claimed that this was part of a wider scheme by Jubilee to rig elections as was the case in 2013 when an extra two million ballot papers were printed for the presidential elections.

The NASA leader affirmed that high ranking Jubilee Party officials visited Dubai in February 2016 and met the representatives from the company to discuss the tender.

Odinga termed the move to award the tender to the firm as ill-advised and vowed to oppose the actions by IEBC.
