Judiciary Will Not Make Decisions Leading to Postponement of Elections - Chief Justice David Maraga Declares

Chief Justice David Maraga has stated that the Judiciary will not make any decisions that would lead to the postponement of the August elections.

Justice Maraga made the comments on Thursday in response to a petition that had been filed by the National Super Alliance (NASA) and Thirdway Alliance lawyers Jackson Awele and Elias Mutuma.

Mr Awele and Mr Mutuma today filed a petition seeking to stop the printing of ballot papers which is set to begin on June 23rd in Dubai.

Earlier on, Opposition leader Raila Odinga had announced that he would move to block the ballot paper printing as the tender had been compromised.

According to Mr Odinga, ballot papers for the Presidential elections had already been printed contrary to IEBC's position that the process would begin on 18th July.

IEBC chairman Wafula Chebukati, however, dismissed the remarks stating that no printing had been done.

“We have noted with concern comments attributed to Hon Raila Odinga that presidential ballot papers have been printed and that he shall seek judicial redress on the award of the printing ballot papers to Al Ghurair Printing and Publishing LLC," he stated.

Mr Chebukati warned that such allegations could divide Kenyans ahead of the elections and appealed to all parties involved in the election to avoid court action against the printing of ballot papers as it would affect the August 8 General Election.
