Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) Declares NASA's Election Plan Illegal

The National Super Alliance (NASA) on Wednesday suffered a blow after the IEBC declared their plan to have five agents in every polling station as illegal.

IEBC Chairman Wafula Chebukati noted that each party was only allowed to have one representative per polling station and not five as NASA was planning.

"In some cases, we have 35 candidates, we cannot accommodate all of them in one polling station," Cebukati stated.

In response to Opposition Leader Raila Odinga's claims that presidential ballot papers had already been printed, the IEBC firmly stated that no printing had been done, explaining that the exercise would begin on Friday.

“We have noted with concern comments attributed to Hon Raila Odinga that presidential ballot papers have been printed and that he shall seek judicial redress on the award of the printing ballot papers to Al Ghurair Printing and Publishing LLC," he stated.

Mr Chebukati warned that such allegations could divide Kenyans ahead of the elections and appealed to all parties involved in the election to avoid court action against the printing of ballot papers as it would affect the August 8 General Election.

“We must avoid the temptation to sensationalize the electoral process to the extent that the country is left divided. We have seen allegations being made without any substantiation. This should not be allowed to continue.

“We are also aware that any Kenyan has the constitutional right to seek redress from the courts in matters that they feel aggrieved. However, we wish to remind Kenyans that with 47 days to the General Election, court processes that seek to stop key milestones in the remaining days will no doubt affect the election date," Chebukati stated.
