The motive and the perpetrators of the attack are still unknown.

The bus attack comes barely a week after two police officers and three civilians were killed in Mandera.

The five were shot dead by armed men who attacked a bank in El wak town.

Mandera South OCPD, Charles Chacha confirmed the incident stating that the officers were guarding Equity Bank El wak branch when the attack occurred.

Mr Chacha stated that the attackers arrived at the bank in a Toyota Probox and opened fire, shooting indiscriminately.

Mandera County Commissioner Fredrick Shisia reiterated Mr Chacha's remarks stating that “a Toyota Probox without number plate approached Equity Bank and the occupants started spraying the bank premises with bullets".

The County Commissioner further noted that the increased terror attacks in Mandera could be as a result of the killing of two top commanders of Al-Shabaab from Elwak town.

“We have unconfirmed reports that these incidents are due to the killing of their commanders in two different incidents by our security officers,” Mr Shisai stated.

Al-Shabaab claimed responsibility for the Mandera attack.
