4 Pupils, 4 Police Officers Killed After Lorry Hits IED in Kiunga, Lamu County

Eight people on Tuesday evening lost their lives after a vehicle they were travelling in ran over an Improvised Explosive Device (IED).

The eight, including four pupils and four police officers, are said to have been travelling In a lorry which hit the explosive in Kiunga, Lamu County.

According to reports, the pupils were heading from Mararani to Kiunga primary school after attending the Eid Ul Fitr celebrations while the officers were on their way to Lamu West.

17 officers were also injured and are currently receiving treatment.

Confirming the incident, regional police boss Philip Tuimur affirmed that a security operation led by the Kenya Defence Force and police officers had been launched.

"We are still assessing the situation. We have deployed more police officers to the area to evacuate the injured," Tuimur stated.

Earlier in the day, several people were killed and scores of others injured after armed men attacked a passenger bus at Sankuri in the same county.

The Kenya Red Cross confirmed the accident stating that their rescue team had rushed to the site.
