Kameme FM Listed as Radio Station With Most Hate Speech Messages

A survey conducted by the Elections Observation Group Media Monitoring Unit has listed Kameme FM as the radio station that leads in hate speech cases.

Kameme is under the Media Max Group, a media firm associated with President Uhuru Kenyatta and broadcasts in the Kikuyu language.

According to the survey, 28 cases of hate speech and inflammatory language were recorded between May and June.

The Observation Group assesses spread, degree and substance of hate speech and inflammatory language on radio, TV and newspapers and has monitored five national TV stations, 13 radio stations, including four county-based ones, and four local dailies.

The leader of the initiative Leo Mutisya said it is aimed at deterring hate and inflammatory remarks, especially during the election period.

Four cases of radio presenters who allegedly perpetrate hate speech on their shows were also recorded.

“A number of reported perpetrators were radio presenters, and Kameme FM was in the lead, with a number of incidents recorded against it, including one where they castigated, stereotyped and even played mocking songs against Koigi Wamwere for his political decision to switch political allegiance,” Mutisya said.

The study indicated that Radio Citizen, Radio Ramogi and Ghetto Radio had zero incidences of hate or use of inflammatory language.

The incidences, Mutisya stated, will be shared with respective government agencies, including the Media Council of Kenya, for action.
