Nominated Senator Elizabeth Ongoro Speaks on Election Violence Against Her

Nominated Senator Elizabeth Ongoro has called for swift action from the Electoral Code of Conduct Enforcement Committee and the police to save her from men who have been violent towards her and her supporters.

Senator Ongoro, who is vying for the Ruaraka Parliamentary seat on an Amani National Congress (ANC) ticket, claims that she has been forced to adhere to a strict dusk-to-dawn curfew to evade hooligans sent to attack her.

Ongoro was among 37 politicians summoned by the IEBC after her competitor from the Vision Party, Aaron Masika, accused her and the incumbent MP, TJ. Kajwang' of defacing his campaign materials.

Defending Ms Ongoro against vandalism charges, her lawyer stated that she could not have been involved in the matter as she was in her home under the self-imposed curfew.

"My client stays indoors 12 hours of the night. She couldn’t have been the one to deface the campaign posters," the lawyer stated.

The ANC candidate further blamed the onslaught against her on security apparatus that she accused of having neglected female candidates.

"As a female candidate, I find it hypocritical when I read in the papers that there is enhanced security for female candidates.

"They only target me when I’m meeting women voters, especially vulnerable ones with children and some who are pregnant," Ongoro explained.

Further, she faulted the committee for lack of priorities, casting her competitors in a bad light over recent unfortunate incidences witnessed during campaigns in Mathare Constituency.

"When somebody complains that they have been attacked, or someone has died, and a woman has lost a pregnancy because of political violence and when somebody claims that a poster is overlapping another, which one should be taken seriously," she accused.
