Jacaranda and San Valencia Hotels Closed Over Cholera Outbreak

The Ministry of Health has closed down two popular Nairobi hotels following suspected cases of Cholera outbreak in the county.

Making the announcement on Wednesday, Health Cabinet Secretary Cleopa Mailu stated that the government had closed Jacaranda and San Valencia hotels.

The hotels were shut down after offering catering services to different events where attendees later reported symptoms of the water-borne disease.

At the same time, Mailu ordered that food handlers be retested and certified as the Ministry seeks to curb the disease which has so far claimed four people.

The CS added that treatment centres would be set up in Mathare, Mukuru kwa Njenga, Kawangware, Kibra and several other places to contain the outbreak.

He was speaking after visiting Cholera patients at Kenyatta National Hospital where he divulged that 12 counties had so far been affected by the outbreak.

A total of 336 cases have been reported since May including that of Treasury CS Henry Rotich and his Industrialisation counterpart Adan Mohamed who were rushed to hospital after suffering symptoms of the disease.

They are said to have developed complications a few days after eating during an event held at the KICC.

On Monday, the Ministry cancelled all medical certificates of food handlers in Nairobi County with the Director of Medical Services Jackson Kioko directing all county health departments to vet and license the food dealers afresh.

Mr Kioko also banned hotels from outsourcing food, adding that those wishing to do so should notify the county health department 14 days in advance to allow for inspection.

He noted that his department would work with water companies to test water sold by vendors and also repair broken sewers.
