7 Hospitalised as Kiprop Buzeki and Jackson Mandago's Supporters Clash in Eldoret

Uasin Gishu gubernatorial aspirant Zedekiah Bundotich alias Buzeki narrowly escaped from a violent crowd after his supporters clashed with those of his rival, Governor Jackson Mandago.

The clashes also left least seven people hospitalised with countless others sustaining minor injuries.

Trouble started when the convoy of the two leaders met while on the campaign trail on Friday evening in Eldoret, leading to a stand-off that escalated into chaos.

The supporters exchanged blows and engaged in stone battles, leaving behind casualties.

Police moved in swiftly, firing tear gas canisters into the air to disperse the violent crowd.

Speaking shortly after the incident, Buzeki stated: "We have been attacked as I was campaigning peacefully and it's time police take action on those doing this."

A recent opinion poll released by Infotrack revealed that the billionaire businessman has a commanding lead of 54 percent compared to Mandago's 42 percent.

The fierce rivalry between the two at one point threatened to split Jubilee Party, forcing Deputy President (DP) William Ruto to step in and calm the rising tensions.

Ruto publicly endorsed Mandago at a political rally in the county and urged Buzeki to quit the race. However, in a show of defiance, the independent candidate dismissed the DP and vowed to carry on with his campaigns.

Coincidentally, the confrontation took place at the same place where Buzeki was pelted with stones on April 30 when he announced that he would challenge Mandago as an independent candidate.
