Tanzanian Commission for Universities Blocks Kenyatta University and JKUAT Campuses in Arusha

The Tanzania Commission for Universities (TCU) has blocked Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology (JKUAT) and Kenyatta University (KU) from admitting students in Arusha for the September intake.

The Commission noted that the two universities had failed to meet the set standards.

TCU Executive Secretary Eleuther Mwageni stated that the regulator moved to block the universities following an audit conducted in September and October 2016.

According to the TCU Secretary, the audit revealed a failure by the institutions to observe standards and regulations guiding the sector.

The two Kenyan universities are among 19 higher learning institutions that have been blocked from admitting students in September.

KU and JKUAT will now be required to meet the set standards being allowed to continue with admissions in the Arusha campuses.

The two universities have been operating satellite campuses in Arusha and have been the subject of a heated debate in the past months.

In March, Kenya's Commission for University Education termed the move by public universities to invest abroad as illegal and against the Universities Act.

The Public Investments Committee (PIC) on their part tasked the Vice chancellors of KU and JKUAT to explain how they opened campuses in foreign countries without the government’s consent.
